ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition in which a man does not have the ability to achieve or maintain an erection adequate for normal sexual intercourse. ED may be chronic or recurrent, or it may happen as a single isolated incident. This condition often results from both psychological and physical factors. Erections are made possible by a complex combination of blood vessel and nerve functions that are affected by hormones, especially the main male hormone, testosterone. An important part of the process is the production and release of nitric oxide, which allows the penis to fill with blood.
Anything that interferes with these interactions can interfere with erections. Diabetes, which leads to atherosclerosis and impaired circulation, is the most frequent cause of ED. ED can also be caused by high blood pressure and the medications given for it (and other drugs as well), insufficient testosterone production, hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, repeated infections of sexually transmitted diseases, excessive alcohol consumption, and smoking. Fatigue, overwork, and obesity can compound the problem. Conventional medicine treats ED with medication and erection-enabling devices.
Many of the factors associated with ED become more common with age. This explains why most men who suffer from at least occasional ED are older (although the condition also can affect younger men). While it often takes longer for older men to achieve erections, ED is not a normal consequence of aging. It is estimated that between 15 and 30 million men in the United States have some degree of ED.
No treatment for ED, whether herbal or conventional, should be undertaken until a complete physical examination is performed to see if there is an underlying disorder. Any of the herbal preparations listed here should be effective within three to four weeks of first use.
